Information for Men
In Australia, men face significant domestic violence issues, though they are often underreported and less visible compared to those faced by women. Key issues include physical violence, emotional abuse, and sexual violence.
Key Statistics and Issues
Prevalence of Violence: Around 43% of men have experienced some form of violence since the age of 15, compared to 39% of women. This includes physical violence (42% of men) and sexual violence (6.1% of men).
Emotional Abuse: The prevalence of emotional abuse by a cohabiting partner for men was 2.5% in 2021-22.
Underreporting and Stigma: Domestic violence against men is often underreported due to societal stigma and a lack of awareness about the issue. Men may feel ashamed or fear not being believed, which can deter them from seeking help.
Lack of specialized services: There is a lack of services tailored to male victims of domestic violence. Existing services are often geared towards women, which can make it difficult for men to find appropriate support. Advocacy groups stress the need for more inclusive services and awareness campaigns to address these gaps.
Services are slowly improving: Efforts to support male victims of domestic violence include increasing public awareness, expanding access to gender-inclusive support services, and addressing the unique barriers men face when seeking help. There is also a call for better data collection and research to fully understand the scope of the issue and inform effective interventions.
